English Summary

Detroit house producer Antony Shake Shakir, whom I became aware of throught German Band FSK, published a retrospective called Frictionalism including songs from 1994 to 2009.

Electronic Music from Germany - Hendrick Weber aka Pantha Du Prince just released his great new album „Black Noise“ on Rough Trade and Dial Records. There is an interview with him in German on this site On this track, Noah Lennox alias Panda Bear of Animal Collective who just released a fine solo debut himself is featured on vocals.

There is a bunch of people in Berlin who regularly organize „antifolk“-shows. Two of them recently published Vol. 3 of their „Berlin Songs“ compilations featuring artists living in Berlin, but also musicians who stopped in the city for a show. The song featured is fairly untypical. Christiane Roesinger became well known with indie bands Lassie Singers and Britta and recently recorded her first solo album with the help of Andreas Spechtl of Ja, Panic, an indie band from Hamburg.

Mount Kimbie are a duo from London who push dubstep to its borders. This song is taken from a sampler compiled and distributed by De:Bug, Germany's biggest magazine for electronic music and download portal zero“ accompanying this yearsClub Transmediale Festival which itself accompanies (video) art festivalTransmediale which takes place every year in late January / early February in Berlin. Club Transmediale presents electronic and experimental music shows and performances.

Die Sterne, one of the best known bands of the so called „Hamburger Schule“ in the 90s have collaborated with Munic house producer Munk. The band has already released an EP with material of their forthcoming longplayer, called „Der Riss“, from which the song is taken.

Whirlpool Productions (Justus Köhncke, Hans Nieswand and Eric D. Clark, all three of them well known solo artists by now) were a German-American house band that released several well received records in the late 90s, early 2000s. Now they have reunited for some shows. This track is taken from their secoend album „Dense Music“ (1996 – bonus track) which also includes their biggest hit „From Disco To Disco“ which was on top of the charts in italy for 9 weeks. There is also agreat video on Youtube.

Chicha Libre are a French-American band who pay tribute to a Peruvian style of music called chicha which they helped to make popular in the West. Chicha has its roots in the late 60s when musicians fused spanish and native indian music with psychedelic music. It became popular in the early 80s when it was championed by indian migrants newly arrived in the slums of Lima. Apparently you still hear it on every street corner in Lima. It is also called Cumbia Andina because it is closely related to cumbia.

N.A.S.A. (für „North America / South America“) ist das Projekt von DJ Squek E. Clean aus Los Angeles und DJ Zegon aus Sao Paulo, dass bei der Veröffentlichung des Debütalbums vor einigen Wochen erstmal durch die großen Namen der Gastsänger/innen Eindruck machte. Die reichen von B.I.G. über M.I.A. bis David Byrne – aber was steckt dahinter?

Ze Gonzales a.k.a. DJ Zegon, eine Hälfte des DJ-Duos, spricht im Interview über seine Liebe zum HipHop und zu alten brasilianischen Platten, die nicht den üblichen Klischees entsprechen, über musikalsiche Perfektion und Brüche und warum sich auf dem US-Markt trotz des hohen Latino-Bevölkerungsanteils nicht einmal spanischsprachige, geschweige denn portugiesischsprachige Platten jenseits der jeweiligen Communities vermarkten lassen.

Anschließend ein kleiner Streifzug durch die brasilianische Popmusik und durch neue globale Tanzmusik von Indien über Angola, Brazilien, Puerto Rico und die USA nach England. U.a. mit Ana Rosely, Bonde Do Tigrao, Ishq Bector und Jay Z.

Vorankündigung: Neko Case im Interview + wandernde Rootsmusik

Man könnte sie die große alte Dame des Alternative Country nennen – wenn 38 Jahre nicht noch recht jung wären und Case sich selbst als Country-Sängerin bezeichnen würde, weil sie die Genrebezeichnung nicht irgendwelchen staatstragenden Schmierlappen überlassen will. Ihre Wurzeln hat sie jedoch im Punk und sie liebt den Gospel.

Mit 15 büxte die US-Amerikanerin aus dem Bundesstaat Washington von zu Hause aus, begann bald Schlagzeug zu spielen und entdeckte später ihre Liebe zur Countrymusik – und zu Kanada. Nach ihrem Studium in Vancover musste sie jedoch wieder zurück in die USA. In Chicago baute sie sich im Dunstkreis des Bloodshot-Labels ihr musikalsiches Umfeld auf, hielt aber die Bande zu Musikerfreunden nach Kanada aufrecht und fand mit Calexico und Howe Gelb neue Freunde in Tuscon, Arizona.Weil dort die Mieten deutlich günstiger sind, verlegte die dauertourende Musikerin ihren Wohnsitz dahin. Jetzt hat sie sich eine Scheune in Vermont gekauft, wo sie als Kind gelebt hat.

All diese Stationen sind auf dem neuen Album „Middle Cyclone“ zu hören, inclusive Froschchor, im Takt zwitschernder Rotkehlchen und einem Orchester aus sechs ausgemusterten Klavieren. Im Interview erzählt sie, was sie sich bei dem merkwürdigen Cover gedacht hat, von ihrem Engagement für Tierrechte und warum es als „Tomboy“ so schwierig ist zu zeigen, dass man Liebe braucht. In diesem Zusammenhang verrät sie uns auch ihre Lieblingsliebeslieder.

Später wird in Neko Case Wurzeln und musikalischem Umfeld gewildert: Countryeskes alt und neu, aber auch Blues und Gospel. Alles mit einem Schuß Punk, zumindest im Geiste; u.a. mit Lyle Lovett, der Handsome Family und Billy Holliday. Nebenbei klärt sich (zumindest ein bißchen): Was ist eigentlich Alternative Country und woher kommt und wohin geht die Rootsmusik.

Vorankündigung: Andrew Bird im Interview + Musik aus Chicago 7.2.09

Mit vier Jahren lernte er Geige spielen, seitdem gehört Musik für ihn wie das Atmen zum Leben: Der Chicagoer Singer-Songwriter hat die Ambition, ganz eigene Musik zu schaffen, die auf keine Referenzen verweist. Jetzt hat er sein neues Album „Noble Beast“ veröffentlicht, aufgenommen in Nashville mit Mark Nevers aus dem Lambchop-Dunstkreis, und in Chicago im Studio von Wilco. Andrew Bird erzählt von Geistern in den Maschinen, die Resonaz der eigenen Knochen und warum er nicht zwingend auf das Gelernte zurückgreifen will.

Weiter geht's dann mit Musik aus Birds Heimatstadt Chicago. Die Metropole im Herzen der USA war außer beim Chicago Blues nie Vorreiterin eines ganz eigenen Genres – aber immer passierten und passieren Entwicklungen auch hier, erhalten neue Anstöße und Nuancen. Mit Musik aus der „Windy City“ oder auch Chi-Town könnte man Tage füllen. Also völlig unvollständig und vielleicht etwas schulbuchhaft durch Zeit und Stile – aber trotzdem schön. U.a. mit Koko Taylor, DJ Pierre, Wilco und Red Red Meat.
